Immigrant students interact with Grade 1
Grade 1A welcomed some young adult immigrant students into their classroom yesterday. One student in the classroom, Peter, did his ‘Igloo Community project’ on Immigrant Services earlier this Spring as part of a Grade 1 Community Building and Justice Seeking project. Peter’s mom, Yvette Lowen, teaches immigrant students and Peter went to meet her students and learn about what Immigrant Services does for new people coming to Canada. The youth were from the counties of Syria, Sudan and Eritrea.
The boys enjoyed taking some grade 1 students outside to show them some new soccer skills and play with them as well as teach them some soccer words in their language, such as "pass" which is "wazza" in Arabic. The girls played literacy and math games with the grade 1 students and learned how to say hello and goodbye in various languages. "It was a very positive experience for both Grade 1’s and the immigrant students! They enjoyed Building Community with each other," said Teacher Carolyn Kruisselbrink. Thank you to Yvette and Carmen for bringing your students to our classroom!
